1973 Porsche 917/30 Can Am Car

This car is chassis 917/30-004 and was intended to be Mark Donohue’s new car for the 1974 Can Am season.  Because of the dominance of these cars during the 1973 season, the SCCA made some rules changes that would have made the cars uncompetitive. With a dry weight of 1680 lbs and over 1500 horsepower on tap they would have completely dominated the 1974 season as well.  This car was sold to a Porsche Importer in Australia in the late 70′s, then bought back by Porsche in the 80′s and displayed in the museum in the Sunoco livery.  It was later completely disassembled and restored from the ground up.  Porsche rebuilt the engine using the last remaining new 5.4 liter engine case.  I took these pictures at the Amelia Island Concours in 2006.
