Tom Curry of Low Country Pavers organized the inaugural Beaufort County Toys for Tots Car Show that was held yesterday at the Shelter Cove Community Park. He put this all together in only three weeks with 75 local cars coming out in support of the Toys for Tots program. The stage was piled full of toys donated by participants and spectators. There was something for everyone’s taste in the collection of cars. Members of our local Porsche club showed up with at least 8 cars and there were several Ferrari’s, Muscle cars, vintage American Brass era cars and everything in between. Spectators were flowing through all day. Can’t wait for next year. With more time to organize it Tom should have a huge turnout. We’ll be there!

Jubilee visitor enjoys a great surprise: a weekend with the Panamera

Stuttgart. Just eleven months after opening on 31 January 2009, the Museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has set up a new record in popularity: Today the Head of the Porsche-Museum, Achim Stejskal, welcomed the 500,000th visitor. “Reaching this magic figure before Christmas in our very first year, is really a wonderful gift for the season“, stated Stejskal on the occasion.

The jubilee visitors from Stuttgart received a great surprise on the occasion, a voucher for a free high-power test drive: Porsche AG is providing the family Rosenberger with the latest Porsche, a four-door Panamera, for a whole weekend.

The Porsche Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00. On the last Monday of this year, 28 December 2009, the Museum will also be open for an exclusive visit. The current Panamera Moment special exhibition is continuing until 28 February 2010.

Porsche Motorsport News - Porsche Cup 2009

Dirk Werner has won the coveted Porsche Cup for the most successful driver of privately-entered race cars. The accolade, awarded by Porsche AG, was presented by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Supervisory Board Chairman of Porsche AG, at the season-closing “Night of Champions” celebration in the Porsche Museum. In addition to the challenge cup, the German also received a Porsche 911 GT3 worth around 120,000 Euro. Last year, Werner was narrowly beaten to the trophy by Australian Alex Davison. Werner joins the ranks of world class Porsche Cup winners which include Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Bernd Schneider, Bob Wollek, Henri Pescarolo and Marc Lieb.

Over the course of this season, Dirk Werner won the drivers’ classification in the Grand-Am Series with Leh Keen at the wheel of a Farnbacher Loles Racing 911 GT3 Cup. Thanks to their four victories, Porsche took home the manufacturers’ title, with Farnbacher Loles Racing claiming team honours. The Carrera Cup champion of 2006 is the first European to win the Grand-Am Series two times after his triumph of 2007. Werner also contested four rounds of the American Le Mans Series at the side of Porsche works pilot Wolf Henzler. At the 1,000 mile Petit Le Mans event, the pair ranked third in a 911 GT3 RSR. At the long distance Nürburgring 24 hour classic, the 28-year-old saw the chequered flag in third place with his teammates Emmanuel Collard, Wolf Henzler and Richard Lietz with Manthey Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S. For Mamerow Racing, Werner won three rounds of the Nürburgring long distance championship.

Second place in the 2009 Porsche Cup went to Raymond Narac. The Frenchman won six races in the International GT Open at the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of IMSA Performance Matmut, and concluded the season in third place with his teammate and Porsche works driver Patrick Pilet. Again with Pilet, the 42-year-old yielded sixth place in the European Le Mans Series. In Portimao, the pair managed a podium result in second. Narac also contested the 24 hour races in Le Mans and at Spa-Francorchamps, as part of the FIA GT Championship.

The third best private driver was Richard Westbrook. During 2009, the Briton competed in eight different race series, crowning his season with the drivers’ title of the FIA GT Championship in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Prospeed Competition. The 34-year-old also contested two races each in the American Le Mans Series, the International GT Open, the Belgian GT Championship and the ADAC GT Masters. Westbrook also made a guest appearance in the Grand-Am Series.

The 2009 Porsche Cup carries a total value of 253,000 Euro, with positions two to ten receiving graduated prize money. In the competition for the title of the best private race driver of the year, Porsche awards points in prototype and grand touring race series as well as in selected long distance races following a special system.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup champion honoured

Thirteen races, 13 podiums, champion: Jeroen Bleekemolen was honoured by Porsche AG for winning the title of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, the fastest international brand trophy series. At the Porsche Centre Stuttgart, the Konrad Motorsport pilot received a very special prize: A brand-new Porsche 911 GT3.

Jeroen Bleekemolen secured the championship title with a 47-point advantage over René Rast. Aside from winning four races this season as well as the final in Abu Dhabi, the 28-year-old Dutchman set a new record: The title defender climbed the podium at all 13 Supercup rounds this year.

Like all Porsche race vehicles, the 435 hp road-going 911 GT3 sports car was developed in the Motorsport Centre at Weissach. Bleekemolen’s GT3 is decked out in Carrara-white – matching the colour in which Porsche delivers the race cars. Jens Walther, head of Porsche makes cups, handed over the key.

Congratulations goes out to both the Boxster and Cayman for making Car and Driver magazine’s list of “10 Best” vehicles sold in America.

This is the 11th time the Boxster has appeared on the list and the 4th time for the Cayman.

According to a member of the panel: “There are a lot of words beginning with the letter “P” that can describe the mechanically identical Boxster and Cayman – but we think the most appropriate one is Perfect.”

The list is determined by a panel of 18 editors using a 100-point scale. They evaluate the vehicles based on functional performance, driving satisfaction and value. To be considered for the award, vehicles have to be priced below the cap of $80,000.

Huge customer interest for the fourth Porsche model series

Stuttgart/Leipzig. Today, just three months after the new Panamera went on sale the 10,000th car rolled off the production line at the Leipzig plant of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart. The 500 HP platinum silver metallic Panamera Turbo will be delivered to a customer in Singapore.

Michael Macht, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG: “Sales of the Panamera have really taken off: we have already secured over 9,000 orders. Shortly after it was launched our Gran Turismo won the coveted “Goldenes Lenkrad” ["Golden steering wheel"] and “Auto Trophy” awards in Germany. It has also won many international prizes.” The Panamera 4S is proving particularly popular and has a share of 44 per cent – putting it ahead of the Turbo (36 per cent) and the Panamera S (20 per cent).

The company plans to build 20,000 Panamera per year across the whole product cycle. The fourth Porsche model series is being manufactured at the Leipzig plant in the so-called model mix, sharing a production line with the Cayenne SUV. The innovative, highly streamlined production is seen as a model of technological and economic excellence for the automobile industry worldwide.

There has been a lot of interest in Cream White cars so I thought I would post this ‘09 Turbo Cab that was in for service the other day. This one has Cocoa interior and a Cocoa top. Notice how well the Makassar wood on the steering wheel, dash trim, shifter knob and emergency brake handle work with the Cocoa.

Look how clean the exterior looks with the rocker panels, front chin spoiler and rear bumper apron painted exterior color. As is the grills and rear model designation below the rear spoiler. Beautiful details.

George has been working on this 3.6 liter 964 engine project for the last few months. It originally came out of a ‘91 Carrera. He has increased its displacement to 3.8 liters fitting it with 8.5 to 1 JE pistons. He has kept the compression low as he is planning on adding one or maybe two Turbo’s.

The twin plug cylinder heads have been ported and fitted with larger valves and he installed new Evo GT2 cams. Notice that each plug has its own coil. The intake is a modified 3.2 manifold with electronic injection.  All will be run by a Motec engine management system.

I can’t wait for him to get it finished and in a car. That’s his next decision, what to put it in.

Our local Porsche Club, the Coastal Empire Region held their annual Christmas party at the dealership last night. It was a great turn out with wonderful food and drink. Everyone brought a toy for the Toy’s for Tot’s program. They also announced the results of this years election of new board members. Buddy Brown was elected President, David Grandt Vice President, Conard White Secretary and Basil Mathews Treasurer.

Sales of Cayman models increase by 88 percent

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, delivered 1,626 cars to customers in the USA in November 2009. This corresponds to growth of 18 percent compared to last November. The Panamera enjoyed a particularly warm welcome from customers in the USA. In November 366 units of the four-passenger Gran Turismo were sold. The Panamera has been available in the USA since October 17.

There was good news on the sales front for the mid-engine Boxster sports car and the Cayman. A total of 96 units from the Boxster line were sold to customers, which is a 20 percent increase over November 2008. Sales of the Cayman models rocketed up by 88 percent with the sale of 137 units. A total of 362 units of the sporty all-wheel drive Cayenne were also sold. Compared to November 2008, this represents a life-cycle related decline of 10 percent. Deliveries of the 911 model fell 25 percent to 395 units compared to the same period last year.

Porsche offers insight into the development of the new Gran Turismo

Stuttgart. Special tidbits at the Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen: For the first time, visitors of the Porsche Museum will experience the model series Panamera. A range of exhibits and documents are offering an insight into the development of the latest model series of the Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, in an extraordinary atmosphere. The special “Panamera Moment“ exhibition (from 8 December 2009 to 28 February 2010) presents the innovations of the four-door Gran Turismo i.e. via a sophisticated cutaway model. Films on the design and technical features of the vehicle complete this experience.

The Special Exhibition comes in an artistic framework set by the well-known car photographer Frank M. Orel with his spectacular pictures. This photo artist from Stuttgart has photographed Porsche’s new Gran Turismo in situations both unusual and, indeed, quite unexpected. Shortly after having been launched in September, the Panamera was awarded the renown prizes “Goldenes Lenkrad“ (Bild am Sonntag / Autobild) and “Auto-Trophy“ (Auto Zeitung) as well as several international prizes.

This ‘73 911 T is the final post of the five Porsche’s that were displayed on Sunday at this years Hilton Head Concours. It belongs to Ralph & Janet Thomas of Highlands, North Carolina.

The original owner was none other that Peter Gregg, (the paint scheme probably gave that away, Brumos livery and all) and was his daily driver when he and Hurley Haywood won the 1973 24 Hours at Daytona. And being Peter Gregg’s car it was ordered with full factory competition equipment.

The second owner was Gregg’s Sales Manager at Brumos, Bat Masterson and he did some racing with it. It has had ten previous owners and is fully documented.

While you are gathered with your family on this wonderful holiday, lets remember our troops in our prayers who are not with their families but out defending our freedom.

If you are a regular visitor to Porschebahn you have seen this gorgeous 356 before. It belongs to Ed & Jean Kriscunas and I shot these pictures at this years Hilton Head Concours. I have been romancing Ed’s 356 and his 1984 Carrera for quite some time. I used a picture of this car for our email Christmas card last year. I can’t get enough of it.

This 356 has aluminum doors and disc brakes. Auto Trophy for the Porsche Panamera and the 911 Carrera

Stuttgart. Two of the models built by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, received the coveted “Auto Trophy” award today from the leading German car magazine Auto Zeitung – the Porsche Panamera in the luxury segment and the Porsche 911 Carrera in the sports car segment.

Having only entered the market in September 2009, the Panamera has immediately moved up right to the top of the winners’ podium, just as the 911 Carrera is now defending its top position in the sports car segment for the 16th time.

In all, 104,442 readers of Auto Zeitung cast their vote in the 22nd Auto Trophy. Receiving 25.6 per cent of all votes in its category, the Panamera was the top scorer in the luxury class out of 14 contestants nominated. In the sports car category 22.1 per cent of all readers chose the 911 Carrera as their No 1 out of no less than 23 models.

The Panamera had already been awarded the “Das Goldene Lenkrad” (The Golden Steering Wheel) in early November as the “Best New Car of the Year in the Luxury Class”. This prize is awarded by the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag together with the car magazine Auto Bild and its European issues.

The Panamera is however a great success not only in Europe, but also with international car journalists the world over, having won a number of international awards recently. In Canada, for example, 70 of the leading car journalists grouped within the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) have chosen the Panamera as the “Best New Prestige Car”. Conducting thorough test drives, the AJAC journalists were thrilled by the Panamera Turbo featuring, among other highlights, the best brakes and the best acceleration ever measured by the AJAC.

Again in Canada, the car journal Le Guide de l’Auto also ranks the Panamera as No 1 in the “Prestige Cars” category.

In the USA the editors of the online magazine Inside Line have given the Panamera their “Most Wanted Award”. A leading automobile portal reaching more readers each month than subscribe to any car journal, Inside Line highlighted in particular the overall performance of Porsche’s Gran Turismo.

In Great Britain the Panamera has brought home no less than two significant titles, Vehicle Dynamics International lauding Porsche’s new luxury performance model not only as their “Car of the Year”, but also the “Dynamicist of the Year”, with its perfectly engineered chassis delivering an equal share of balance, grip, comfort and control all in one. At the same time the same magazine lauded the dynamic engine mounts exclusive to the Porsche 911 GT3 and the new 911 Turbo as their “Innovation of the Year”.

Yet another coveted title awarded to the Panamera is the “Interamerican Car of the Year 2010” proclaimed by the Federación Interamericana de Periodistas del Automóvil (FIPA), an association of 81 Panamerican car journalists from 21 countries. Porsche’s Gran Turismo thrilled these experts in all disciplines such as progressive technology, performance, environmental care, and the significance of the car for each national market. Given these qualities, the Panamera was able to beat a significant line-up of no less than 37 leading automobiles.

World Debut: Starter Battery in Lithium-Ion Technology

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is the first car maker in the world to offer a starter battery in lithium-ion technology. Weighing less than 6 kg or 13 lb, the new battery is more than 10 kg or 22 lb lighter than a conventional 60 Ah lead battery.

The new lithium-ion battery will be available as of January 2010 for the 911 GT3, 911 GT 3 RS, and Boxster Spyder as an option delivered with the car, selling at a price in the German market of Euro 1,904 including 19 per cent value-added tax.

The battery is delivered as a separate unit together with the car and may subsequently be fitted as an alternative to the regular, conventional starter battery.

The cars are delivered with both batteries, therefore they are ready for use throughout the whole year. Since, while the lightweight battery offers a very high standard of everyday driving qualities, its starting capacity is limited at temperatures below 0o C or 32o F due to its specific features.

The primary reason for developing and introducing the new battery was its lower weight. In sports cars built consistently for superior driving dynamics such as the two versions of the 911 GT3 and the Boxster Spyder, less weight naturally means even greater agility and driving dynamics.

In its length and width the lithium-ion battery comes in the same dimensions as the regular battery, but is approximately 70 millimetres or 2.8” lower. The fastening points, electrical connections and voltage range are fully compatible with the respective models, allowing simple and quick replacement of the standard lead battery by the lightweight unit, for example when racing on the track.

With its nominal capacity of 18 Ah, the lithium-ion battery, through its specific features, offers a level of practical output and performance not only comparable to that of a 60 Ah lead battery, but rather even better in many cases.

On a conventional car battery only about 30 per cent of the total capacity is actually available for practical use due to the configuration of the system, while this restriction does not apply to the lithium-ion battery. On the contrary, through its characteristic structure and, in particular, the independence of the chemical composition of the electrolytes from the charge status – a lithium-ion battery consistently offers almost 100 per cent of its capacity.

Delivery of power by the lithium-ion battery throughout its useful charge range is likewise significantly better, providing its full power, for example, when starting the engine almost independently of the current charge level.

After the engine has started, the new Porsche battery shows further benefits in the charge process, being able through its smaller internal resistance to take up more power than a conventional battery and thus re-charge more quickly.

Yet a further benefit is that a lithium-ion battery allows a significantly greater number of charging and discharging cycles, plus the two further advantages that the self-discharging effect is lower and the service life of the battery longer.

The lithium-ion battery being introduced by Porsche as the pioneer in this area is made up of wound film of carbon and iron phosphate with a ceramic film moisturised by the electrolyte serving as a separating layer in between. Compared with other types of lithium-ion batteries using a combination of manganese oxide, cobalt oxide or nickel, this lithium-iron-phosphate battery, as it is called, offers advantages when used as a starter battery. It is robust and consistently guarantees the usual voltage of 12 V in the car’s on-board network.

The lightweight battery is made up of four cells and integrated control electronics. This battery management system protects the battery from major discharge and guarantees a consistent charge level within the individual cells. Once battery voltage drops below a certain threshold, a warning signal reminds the driver to re-charge the battery either simply by driving the car through the power of the engine running or by means of a conventional battery charger.

The new lithium-ion battery will also be available for retrofitting from February 2010 on the three models mentioned from Porsche Tequipment. The sales price in Germany when retrofitted after delivery of the car is Euro 2,499 including 19 per cent value-added tax.

For all of the Lovers of Speed Yellow, as I am starting to become, look what came in on trade last week, ‘02 Carrera 4S with ONLY 18,500 miles. The two previous owners are friends of mine and I have enjoyed seeing it over the last 5 years. It is absolutely beautiful! Both owners showed it a lot of love and care. It is heading to a new home in Florida this week. I hate to see it go.

New Racing Version for International GT Sport

Stuttgart. Following the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is entering yet another racing car in the 2010 motorsport season: The 911 GT3 R will be raced in series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, thus succeeding the 911 GT3 Cup S. The main focus in developing this new model was on even better drivability and even easier handling.

The 911 GT3 R is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering maximum output of 480 bhp (353 kW) transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed dog gearbox.

The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R weighing just 1,200 kg or 2,646 lb was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup presented in September for one-make cup racing. Thanks to its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model. Both cars are based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS street-legal sports car.

An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with “throttle-blip” function make it much easier to get used to this new GT3 racing car than its predecessor, meaning that the new model is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver.

Flared wheel arches added on to the body both front and rear bear clear testimony to the wider track than on the former model. And like all second-generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Birmingham Motor Show. The car is built by Porsche’s Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to Customer Teams the world over as of spring 2010. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is 279,000 euros plus local sales tax/VAT.

Legendary Porsche Engineer turns 80

Stuttgart. The former race and development engineer at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Hans Mezger, will be celebrating his 80th birthday. On the subject of this celebration, Porsche development chairman Wolfgang Dürheimer said, “Hans Mezger is one of the most important engineers in our company’s history. For four decades, our racing cars won with engines designed by Hans Mezger and made the Porsche name a synonym for sports performance around the world.”

Hans Mezger was born on November 18, 1929 in Besigheim, Swabia. After graduating from high school and studying machine design, he started at Porsche in 1956, working on engine development. The first of a long series of racing engines designed by him was the 1.5 liter eight cylinder engine used in the Porsche 804 Formula 1 racing car, in which Dan Gurney won the French Grand Prix in 1962. Over the next decade, Hans Mezger’s work ranged from the design of the legendary six cylinder boxer engine for the Porsche 911 to the development of the legendary Porsche turbo engines used in both production and racing cars. One particular highpoint was the air-cooled twelve cylinder engine for the Porsche 917, which produced up to 1,200 horsepower in the 1973 CanAm version.

After developing so many successful racing cars, such as the Porsche 935, 936 and 956/962 models, Hans Mezger dedicated himself in the early 1980s to one particular customer commission: he designed the “TAG-Turbo made by Porsche” for the British racing team McLaren – a Formula 1 engine that produced up to 1,000 horsepower from a capacity of just 1.5 liters. From 1984 to 1986, the engine produced at the Porsche development center in Weissach dominated the elite class of motorsport and consequently landed three Formula 1 world championship titles.

After more than 40 years at Porsche, Hans Mezger retired in 1994. However, he retained close links with the Porsche brand. He still owns a Porsche 911 Carrera and is always a very welcome guest at the new Porsche Museum. When Hans Mezger visits the racing cars and engines he designed which are exhibited there, history comes alive once more.

Extensive Tire Test Program for Older Model Series

Stuttgart. Porsche has extended its demanding approval process for winter tires to include tyres for young and old classics. Offering customers this unusual service, the German manufacturer of sports cars enables drivers of older models to use the best available products on their car. Porsche is therefore providing valuable help and orientation particularly in the process of choosing new winter tires with safe driving characteristics also on snow and ice. A further point is that this makes Porsche one of the few car makers to offer such an elaborate tire approval process.

Well over 70 per cent of all Porsche sports cars ever built still exist today and are still driven actively in most cases – in both summer and winter. Indeed, even classic Porsche models more than 20 years old still offer the kind of performance today one would expect of a modern sports car. But the tyres fitted when such old and new classics were still in production have no longer been available for years. Tire treads and rubber compounds have changed in an ongoing process of development, thus influencing the driving behaviour of such old Porsche models.

Conducting elaborate tests, Porsche’s engineers determine which of the tires available today harmonise best with the features of a classic Porsche. The highlight in this testing and approving process is an extensive test programme up north in the Polar Circle.

Numerous Porsche models built-in former years, among them the 911, 928, 964, 993 and 996, and then all the way to the first Boxsters, have been tested for this purpose on countless laps at the Arctic Driving Center in the Finnish town of Rovaniemi.

The criteria to be fulfilled by the tires tested in order to receive approval by Porsche are so strict that not all tires met the test requirements. The characteristics and features typical of an older air-cooled 911, for example, form a challenge not easy to overcome.

Further tests for dry and wet handling on test routes free of snow round off the test programme as such. Information on which tires are recommended for which Porsche model is presented on Porsche’s website (http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/documentsanddownloads/) and is also available at all Porsche Centers.

Coming soon: the new top of the range 911 from Zuffenhausen

Stuttgart. Timed to coincide with the sales launch in Germany, the museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is also set to launch the latest high performance sports car from Zuffenhausen: from November 21 to 29, 2009, interested parties can come and see the new 911 Turbo in an exhibition alongside its predecessors. Visitors can enjoy an insight into the development of the seventh generation Turbo. An exclusive prototype of the new 500 horsepower 911, used by the Porsche engineers for testing, will be on show.

At the same time as this launch, the museum is also publishing the book, “Porsche Turbo Stories”. The fourth volume from the in-house publishers, “Edition Porsche-Museum”, contains a 224 page presentation of the 30 year history of the top model of the 911 sports car range – from the first 911 Turbo 3.0 in 1974 to the latest model. Previously unpublished pictures from the company archive and a selection of the most attractive advertisements give the reader a new insight into Porsche’s flagship model. The book is available from the Porsche Museum shop for 14.90 Euros, in German and English.

 Jim Smeltzer of Hilton Head displayed his Twin Grill Roadster at this years Concours and came away with the Palmetto Award. His Twin Grill is one of 248 built in 1962. It was great seeing some local Porsche’s win this year. Congratulations Jim!

Jim’s Roadster has won four 356 Registry East Coast Holidays, 2003 in Ashville NC, 2004 in Williamsburg VA, 2005 in Berry Hill VA and 2008 in Lancaster PA. 

It has been restored in stages with the paint work being done in 1990. Can you believe how fantastic that 19 year old paint job looks? A testament to the care Jim gives the car. The engine, underside, brakes, electrical and chrome were completed in 2002.

Wally – Here is the latest on the Gulf Blue 911

We have finally gotten around to painting the car after much delay and finally coming up with a rotisserie which makes the job so much simpler. Went to harbor freight and bought two heavy duty engine stands then took the original front and rear bumper and drilled to fit the rotating section of the engine stand. Works great but will have to modify the stands slightly to level out the reciever on the stand. A booster pad on the rear two wheels will level it out and then you have a moveable rotisserie for $200 courtesy of Harbor Freight.

We are using BSF German base clear on the car – they were able to duplicate the paint code (328) for the Gulf Blue and so far it looks great. Always the problem with sandblasting a car as the sand naturally comes out when you are painting.

Next is the top side paint and reassembly of the suspension to make it a roller. Then I will put it into the Car cover and finish the motor. We are not going to cut the fenders and flare it out as I just did not have the heart to do the cutting. I think I read somewhere that only 3% of the production of 1977 911 S’ was painted Gulf Blue and I would suppose that most of them are history by now.

Congratulations to George and Paige Word of Savannah, Georgia for winning their class at the 2009 Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance. They have won many awards with this gorgeous Cab at numerous PCA events, the Amelia Island Concours, previous years Hilton Head Concours and Euro Auto Festivals.

The original owner was noted racing driver Peter Corey. It has been restored to original colors with leather interior and gets driven an average of 3,000 miles per year.

Porsche Ranks Ahead of All Other Top-End Brands; On Track for Record Year

Atlanta - IntelliChoice.com announced this week that the winner of its 2009 Best Warranty for luxury cars is Porsche Cars North America.  This is the second consecutive time that Porsche’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program has received this prestigious award.

Under the Porsche program, customers who purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Porsche will receive a company backed 2-year or cumulative 50,000 miles (whichever comes first) limited warranty that mirrors the new car limited warranty coverage. Additionally, for customers who buy cars with a balance of the New Car Limited Warranty Coverage, this remaining balance will be added to the new Certified Pre-owned Limited Warranty coverage, which makes coverage up to 6 years from the in-service date.

According to IntelliChoice.com, Porsche rated the highest with customers of luxury brands in a number of key criteria, including: certification inspection process, brand value, extended manufacturer warranties, title verification, roadside assistance, special financing, return policy and dealer compliance with the program.

“It is an honor to have IntelliChoice again recognize our CPO Warranty as the best among all the luxury competitors,” said Kevin P. Harvey, PCNA’s manager of pre-owned operations.  “From a customer standpoint , this award means we are meeting our goals of providing warranty coverage that gives our customers peace of mind and a sense of value.  Both are key factors to any successful CPO program.”

 So far this year, PCNA has sold 5,603 CPO vehicles, which is just slightly below last year’s record pace of 5,862.

Harvey said he expects to surpass last year’s mark by year’s end.

 ”Being recognized with this prestigious award will certainly help,” he said.

This amazing ‘55 Speedster was displayed by George and Susan Kehler of Johnson City, Tennessee at this years Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance.  It was originally imported to Central America and raced there extensively with many class victories. It won its class and fourth overall in the 1958 Santa Anna races in El Salvadore driven by a then 18 year old Pedro Rodriguez. 

It was ordered with the 1600 Super engine with 75 hp for racing. Currently it has only 45,000 miles on it. I loved all of the racing memorabilia and pictures in the car. What a treat to see.

Four-Times Monte Carlo Winner Dominates European Championship Race

Stuttgart. Walter Röhrl has won the race for the FIA European Rally Championship for Historical Cars in the Spanish town of Lloret de Mar last weekend. Teaming up with co-pilot Peter Göbel, German Rally Champion in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006, the two-times World Rally Champion drove a 1981 Porsche 911 RSR to victory. With their re-built and perfectly prepared rally version of the 911, Röhrl/Göbel immediately moved up to the top group in the race, together with ex-Renault works driver Jean Ragnotti in an Alpine A110, Historical European Championship specialist Michael Stoschek, Valter Jensen and Toto Riolo, all driving a Porsche 911, and three Group 4 Lancia Stratos. Under very difficult weather and track conditions, Röhrl clearly demonstrated his unique driving skills as the four-times Monte Carlo winner on the last two stages of the race, bringing home an historical victory for Wolfgang Reile’s Classic Power Team in the very special style of the truly outstanding driver who also won the European Rally Championship in 1974.

Gran Turismo ranked No 1 in the Luxury Performance Class

Stuttgart. The Porsche Panamera has been awarded the Golden Steering Wheel as the Best New Car of the Year in the Luxury Performance Class. With its combination of supreme comfort and outstanding sportiness, and through its unique design, Porsche’s Gran Turismo convinced the 50-man jury made up of racing drivers, engineers, celebrities and the senior editors of the Auto Bild Magazine Group trying out the candidates on thorough test drives. Before receiving this outstanding award, the Panamera had already been chosen by readers as one of the five best models in the luxury performance class with experts putting the car through its paces in the final contest on a test track in Italy for two enduring days.

This year this special prize presented for the first time by publisher Axel Springer in 1976 was awarded not “just” by the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag, but rather by a group of publications including the Auto Bild Motoring Journal and its European sister publications, making this coveted award even more significant than ever. Michael Macht, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, received the trophy on Wednesday evening from Bernd Wieland, Editor in Chief of Auto Bild, at the headquarters of the Axel Springer AG in Berlin.

It was great to see three local Porsche 356’s in this years Concours. You have seen all three of these beautiful 356’s posted here on Porschebahn. Ed and Jean Kriscunas displayed their White 1964 356 Coupe, George Word won Best of Class with his Black 1963 356 Super 90 Cab and Jim Smeltzer won the Palmetto Award with his Red 1962 356 Twin Grill Roadster. I will post all three cars and a 1955 356 Speedster over the next few days. Like Ed said, they had all the models covered, coupe, cab, roadster and speedster. The Speedster was once raced by Pedro Rodreguez.

Purist Mid-Engined Roadster is the Lightest Porsche

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche’s most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph – with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility com-bined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro.

Bleekemolen crowns championship with victory at final

With a win at the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, Jeroen Bleekemolen from the Netherlands crowned his championship campaign in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Driving for Konrad Motorsport, the title defender beat his arch rival René Rast (Germany) after a gripping duel and was handed the winner’s trophy by the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche. The distinction for second place was undertaken by Wolfgang Dürheimer, Board Member for Research and Development.

After 14 laps on the new Formula 1 circuit in the UAE, Bleekemolen took a pole-to-flag victory to celebrate his fifth win of the season. Moreover, the Dutchman set a new record in the Supercup: At all 13 rounds of the series, he secured a podium result. However, with the number of race wins, René Rast was a nose ahead: The vice-champion from VELTINS MRS Racing dominated six times.

At the start, only Richard Westbrook (Porsche Cars GB) could match the pace set by Jeroen Bleekemolen and René Rast. However, in just lap two, the Briton, who won the rounds in Barcelona and Monaco this season and who claimed the GT2 class title of the FIA GT Championship in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR a week ago, had to let the leading pair pull away. Westbrook saw the flag in third ahead of Ireland’s Damien Faulkner (Walter Lechner Racing School) and guest driver Alessandro Balzan (Ebimotors), who had put in a breathtaking charge through the field from 19th. The newly-crowned champion of the Carrera Cup Deutschland, Germany’s Thomas Jäger (Abu Dhabi Race Team), saw the flag in sixth, with seventh position going to Alessandro Zampedri (SPS Performance) ahead of Slovakia’s Stefan Rosina of the Walter Lechner Racing School squad, who secured third overall in the championship.

After Jeroen Bleekemolen had already claimed the championship with his pole-setting time before race one on Saturday, the final decision for further honours after a gripping season had to wait until Sunday: Konrad Motorsport won the team title, New Zealander Matt Halliday (SANITEC RACING) pocketed the Rookie Classification as the best Supercup newcomer.

Jeroen Bleekemolen (winner): “A fantastic race and a super fight with René. I was slightly quicker after the start, he picked up the pace later on. I’m very pleased to have won. It was very tough. It’s great to conclude such a successful season with a victory – you can’t ask for better than that.”

René Rast (second): “Of course, I would have loved to have won and I actually think I was faster than Jeroen. But what does it matter – it wasn’t so bad today. I’m very happy with the vice-championship and six wins this season.”

Richard Westbrook (third): “Third place is a wonderful success for the team. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is one of the most fiercely-contested series. So I knew that Jeroen and René would be hard to beat. They are the quickest drivers so you don’t get to overtake them so easily. Still, it was an extremely encouraging and motivating race.”

The pits were alive with the sound of Cayman’s, Interseries Cayman’s that is. What a great show these guys put on Friday and Saturday. I was busy working our display and lining up people for test drives and hot laps in the Panamera and did not get to take many pictures. But I did keep my eye on the action on the track as they went by and was able to get a few pictures.

 Jim Bacus in his #3 Hippy car won the Interseries race on Friday. They competed again in the 1 hour enduro on Saturday with Neil Gehani in his #36 Salzburg car placing second, David Hansson’s #1 Rothmans car in third, Collin O’Brien’s #4 Gulf car fourth and Jim Bacus in sixth. Bob Woodman won the enduro in his ‘74 Carrera RSR but what a battle it was. The Interseries cars competed again in a race of their own on Saturday after the enduro with David Hansson winning in his Rothmans car. That is a busy weekend!

 Do not miss a chance to see these guys race, you will not be disappointed. They are VERY competitive but there is a lot of camaraderie amongst them. Thanks to all of the Interseries drivers for coming and giving us a fabulous show and thanks Jim for the race results.

Win for René Rast – title for Jeroen Bleekemolen

At the premiere of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Abu Dhabi, René Rast (Germany) celebrated his sixth win of the season – however the championship title again went to Jeroen Bleekemolen. At the wheel of his Konrad Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the Dutchman secured pole position for the first of the final two rounds of the popular brand trophy series. The two extra points that he received for this were enough for him to claim the title.

On the gigantic new Formula 1 race track in the largest of the United Arab Emirates, Jeroen Bleekemolen made the best start of the field. His teammate Nicholas Tandy showed little respect for great names at his debut in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: The Briton promptly slipped into second position and put the front-runner under enormous pressure in the first lap. Initially, Bleekemolen was able to hold off the guest driver’s attack but had to let his arch rival René Rast overtake in lap five. Competing for VELTINS MRS Racing, the 2008 Carrera Cup champion, who had travelled to Abu Dhabi holding a small title chance, was able to quickly pull away from the rest of the field to bring home his sixth win of the season.

Behind Rast, his pursuers fought fiercely for positions. After half the distance, Nicholas Tandy overtook Jeroen Bleekemolen, who didn’t try too hard to defend his position. The Dutchman had climbed the podium at every round this season and was understandably not keen to jeopardise his eventual third position. Behind the leading trio came Austria’s Norbert Siedler (VELTINS MRS Racing) in fourth, followed by Slovakia’s Stefan Rosina (Walter Lechner Racing School) in fifth.

At his first race for SANITEC RACING, New Zealand’s Supercup newcomer Matt Halliday swept past many opponents to snatch sixth place and with this looks set to win the Rookie Classification. Behind Supercup record winner Patrick Huisman (Netherlands) driving for SPS Performance, American William Langhorne (SANITEC RACING) took eighth place. Ninth position went to Britain’s James Sutton (Porsche Cars GB), who came from the Carrera Cup Great Britain to compete as a guest driver. Siso Cunill from Spain (Konrad Motorsport) saw the chequered flag in tenth.

René Rast (winner): “That was a great race. I’m very pleased. Obviously we had the best set-up in the field, thanks to my team. My start was not perfect but after the Safety Car Phase my pace picked up. It was fierce racing today – and so at one point I just grabbed my chance.”

Nicholas Tandy (second): “I’m very happy. This was my first Supercup race and it was great fun. My start was very good and second position is more than I had hoped for. I would have loved to overtake René as well, but he was unbeatable today.”

Jeroen Bleekemolen (third): “I was amazed how several of my opponents behaved today. I was nudged by six or seven cars and that’s simply not acceptable. Of course, it’s great that we finished on the podium but I could definitely have secured a better result. We had a great car today and I could have won.”

Christmas gifts in the Porsche-Museum Shop

Stuttgart. The Museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is getting ready for the festive season with a range of new products. For the first time, Porsche is offering an advent calendar this Christmas which will provide pre-Christmas pleasure for those with a sweet tooth and sports car fans alike. As well as a high quality chocolate, each door hides a picture and description of an historic Porsche. The calendar is available for the price of Euro 15. The Porsche-Museum is also offering another new product with a set of four cutters for Christmas cookies. The cookie cutters, in the shape of the Porsche 356, 917 and 911 models, are available for Euro 6.90.

Four breadboards in the design of Porsche race cars are available for Euro 35 per set, reflecting designs including the Porsche 550 Spyder. The Porsche bearing the number 55, specially developed for competition use, won its class in 1954 and an overall third place in the Carrera Panamericana. This race success was the birth of the “Carrera” model designation. The famous pink Porsche 917/20 Coupé, known as the “Pink Pig”, also serves as a pattern for a breadboard.

Model car fans can add a very special vehicle to their collections: the metal Porsche 356 roadster from “Tucher + Walther” with a driver figure is available in black and red in display packaging for Euro 29. The 16 cm long car is made in Germany.

In memory of the race driver Umberto Maglioli, the museum shop is also offering the 2006 Sicilian red wine “Nero d’Avola” for Euro 11. Maglioli won the 1956 Targa Florio in Sicily with a Porsche 550 Spyder. Festive greetings can be sent with a set of greetings cards featuring historic Christmas scenes. The folding cards and postcards are also accompanied by a small selection of wrapping paper and are available at the price of Euro 19.

The driver’s reception for the 2009 Hilton Head/Savannah Speed Classic was held at Johnson Square in Savannah this afternoon. The Speed Classic is the starting event for the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance weekend. A parade of racing cars left the track at Hutchinson Island and drove over the Tallmadge Bridge into the historic district for the reception. You should have heard the sound of the engines echoing between the builds of beautiful down town Savannah! 

The best part for me was seeing the Cayman Interseries cars driving through town and parked around the square. I can not wait to see them on the track. They are absolutely gorgeous in their 917 livery! The drivers seemed to be having a great time and Roy and I really enjoyed talking to Jim Bacus about his Cayman and the series. They will be practicing and qualifying tomorrow and racing on Saturday. If you live in the area do not miss the event and the chance to see the Cayman Interseries cars in action as well as the vintage racing cars.

Roger Burdette sent me these last night. We received the allocation to order his RS yesterday and when I called to let him know we could order his car he asked about color choices. He had run across these pictures showing a Black RS. He really wants a Black with Red graphics. As of now they are only available in Grey, Blue and White. Hopefully this is a sign of more colors to come.

A tailor-made finale for Richard Westbrook. Claiming victory in Belgium’s Zolder at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, the Briton secured the FIA GT Championship GT2 class drivers’ title to continue the streak of 911 successes this year. With the 911 GT3 RSR, Porsche pilots won the GT2 championship titles in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series, as well as other championships. Moreover, the 450 hp racer from Weissach was celebrated as the winning car at the prestigious Nürburgring 24 hour race in 2009.

“We can look back on a highly successful year with the 911,” said a satisfied Hartmut Kristen, head of motorsport at Porsche. “Again the 911 GT3 RSR proved to be the most successful GT race car in the world. Congratulations to Richard Westbrook and the Belgian Prospeed team who made this feat possible.”

“This is the most important title of my career,” said a delighted Richard Westbrook. The Briton and his teammate, the French Porsche works driver Emmanuel Collard, had dominated the FIA GT Championship season. With two victories to open their campaign, they planted themselves at the head of the championship standings, which they only lost prior to the finale to the strongest Ferrari team. The pair travelled to Zolder with a three-point gap to the leader, where the Belgian top squad, Prospeed Competition, put together a clever strategy with the support of Porsche. The two title candidates manned different cars to increase their championship chances. Twenty-one-year-old Porsche Junior Marco Holzer joined Richard Westbrook as his new teammate. And the trick worked. Westbrook and Holzer dominated the two-hour final in the fiercely contested and highly competitive GT2 class. The young German performed equally as well as the experienced Briton – Westbrook was the champion of the Porsche Supercup in 2006 and 2007. “Marco did a super job,” praised 34-year-old Westbrook. It was with a touch of regret that Emmanuel Collard congratulated his English teammate on his title win. Together with Porsche Junior Martin Ragginger (Austria), Collard finished the race sixth at the wheel of the 911 fielded by the Italian Brixia Racing team to claim third overall in the championship.
