Preview of Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup round 9 at the European Grand Prix

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Ungarn 2009

Points’ leader Bleekemolen hopes for return to top of podium

Jeroen Bleekemolen is a commanding title defender, and the Dutchman is again making good headway towards the championship trophy. Competing for Konrad Motorsport in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, he has so far secured three wins from the eight races contested in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and has climbed the podium at all races. He is eager to boost his clear lead in the overall classification on Sunday, when the popular brand trophy series runs as support for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia/Spain.

The new street circuit around the America’s Cup harbour suits last year’s winner perfectly. “The track is not as narrow as in Monaco and the walls and barriers are a little further way. If you make a mistake it doesn’t automatically mean you’re out,” says Jeroen Bleekemolen, who won both season-opening races in Bahrain as well as the Istanbul event. Since then he has been without a victory and hopes to be back at the top of the podium in Valencia. “It’s time I won again. But this track is not easy with its fast corners. Particularly when you brake for the final hairpin, you have to be extra cautious. It’s definitely a key point.”

Strong youngster

His strongest rival in the race for the title is René Rast. The reigning Carrera Cup champion from Germany, who drives for VELTINS MRS Racing, is putting the points’ leader under increasing pressure. After a relatively slow start to the season, Rast has put in a strong performance by winning the last three races in Silverstone, on the Nürburgring and in Budapest from pole position. The extension of the Supercup season by two races on 31 October and 1 November on the new Abu Dhabi circuit on the Persian Gulf increases his chances. “Without these races, the title would have already been decided,” he says. His enthusiasm for the Valencia Street Circuit, however, is contained: “We are actually holding out for Spa and Monza. Those are the tracks that especially suit us.”

Stefan Rosina is hoping for his first win in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. Driving for Walter Lechner Racing team, the Slovakian recently gave a commendable performance on the Nürburgring, yielding a podium result for the first time. With his fourth place in Budapest, he elbowed Patrick Huisman (Netherlands) from third in the overall rankings. Huisman, the Supercup record winner (SPS Performance), said farewell to the 2009 title on the Hungaroring when he was handed a stop-and-go penalty for jumping the start and finished the race in eleventh position.

Showing improving form, just in time for his second home race this season, is the Spaniard Siso Cunill. Claiming sixth in Budapest, the Konrad Motorsport pilot achieved his best result so far this season and increased his chances to win the Rookie Classification as the best Supercup newcomer.

Television stations “Eurosport 2” (11.45 hours) and “Sky Sport 2” (11.25 hours) broadcast the Valencia race live on 23 August. In addition, “Eurosport” televises highlights on Sunday evening in the “Motorsports Weekend” programme.
