Preview for Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup rounds 12 and 13 at the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Bahrain 2009

Title decision at the Persian Gulf

The guest appearance of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Abu Dhabi is a premiere and a final at the same time. The popular brand trophy series takes off for the first time on the Formula 1 track at the Persian Gulf, where the fight for the title will be decided at the last two rounds of the season this weekend. Either defending champion Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) or his German challenger René Rast will be celebrated as the new overall winner.

With his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by Konrad Motorsport, Jeroen Bleekemolen has been the most consistent this year. Not only has the Dutchman secured four victories but has climbed the podium at all eleven races to now. In contrast, VELTINS MRS Racing pilot René Rast has experienced a season of highs and lows. Rast has one more win to his credit, but he did not manage to finish all races. With one round on Saturday and one on Sunday at the final in the largest of the seven United Arab Emirates, Bleekemolen therefore holds the best cards. He is just one point off defending his title – and 15th position would do it.

“In this game you should never become too complacent, but one point is normally not a problem,” says Jeroen Bleekemolen, who looks forward to the season final in the desert. René Rast realises he has a slim chance at claiming the title, but is determined to try. “I can still be champion, but from both races I would have to secure pole position and win,” he calculates. “This will be difficult but not impossible. In any case, I’ll be giving one hundred percent.”

Four drivers are battling for third position

His charge will not be made easier by the return of two former Supercup winners: Britain’s Richard Westbrook (Porsche Cars GB), 2009 FIA GT champion in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and Italy’s Alessandro Zampedri (SPS Performance) boost the strong driver line-up in Abu Dhabi and have good chances to win. Underlining just how fierce the competition is in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is the fact that, heading to the final, four drivers are battling for third position in the overall rankings. Stefan Rosina from Slovakia (Walter Lechner Racing School) currently sits third ahead of the Supercup record winner Patrick Huisman (SPS Performance) from the Netherlands, Austria’s Norbert Siedler (VELTINS MRS Racing) and Damien Faulkner (Walter Lechner Racing School) from Ireland. Bringing home podium results from Spa and Monza, Norbert Siedler has put in the strongest drive of the four in the last races and confirmed the high level of competition in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

At the final races in Abu Dhabi, not only the best driver will be announced as the new Porsche champion. Decisions are yet to be made in the other classifications: Fighting for team honours are Konrad Motorsport and VELTINS MRS Racing, in the Rookie standings Supercup newcomer Matt Halliday (SANITEC RACING) from New Zealand has the best chance.

Television stations “Eurosport” (Saturday, 30 October, 12.15 hrs) and “Sky Sport 2” (Saturday, 30 October, 12.20 hrs/Sunday, 1 November, 11.30 hrs) broadcast the final races in Abu Dhabi live. Moreover, “Eurosport“ televises highlights on Sunday in its “Motorsports Weekend Magazin”.
