This 1970 917 was displayed by Dr. Julio Palmaz of Napa California at this years Amelia Island Concours.
Porsche had been competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since the 1950’s and had achieved numerous class wins. They did not, however, have a model powerful enough to vie for the overall win – until the 917 came out. This example, driven by Richard Attwood and Hans Herrman gave Porsche its first overall win at the Sarthe circuit. This car produced over 600 hp from its flat 12-cylinder power plant and was capable of well over 200 mph down the Mulsanne Straight.
