Preview for Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup round 3 at the Spanish Grand Prix

René Rast heads to first European race of the season as points’ leader

With his double victory at the season-opener in the Kingdom of Bahrain, René Rast stepped into the role of favourite in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. At the first race of the season on European soil for the world’s fastest international one-make cup, Rast is determined to further extend his points’ advantage in Barcelona on 9 May. “We had a fabulous start to the season. We mustn’t lose this edge now,” says the 2009 vice champion and Al Faisal Lechner Racing pilot. But the competition is tough. On the Circuit de Catalunya, the 4.6 kilometre Grand Prix track on the outskirts of Barcelona, 24 new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racers line up to compete. “I’m up against a very strong field,” said René Rast, “but the closer the racing, the more fun it is.”

One of his toughest rivals in the title fight comes from his own camp. His teammate at Al Faisal Lechner Racing, Jeroen Bleekemolen from the Netherlands, sits third overall as reigning champion – which is not a position the double Supercup winner is going to be happy with for long. Sharing the same points tally with the Dutchman is Supercup rookie Nick Tandy. The Briton celebrated a strong start to the season claiming a podium result with the 2009 team champion, Konrad Motorsport, at the season-opener in Bahrain, giving him a healthy advantage in the BBS Rookie of the Year classification.

Stefan Rosina underlined his racing dedication

Stefan Rosina travels to Barcelona sitting second overall. Since the Slovakian successfully concluded his management studies in Oxford, he now concentrates fully on his Porsche Mobil1 Supercup campaign. Competing for Lechner Racing this season, he secured second at the first race in Bahrain, underlining his racing dedication and skill. Driving for VELTINS MRS Racing, Jan Seyffarth (Germany) was another contender to secure a podium result at the season-opener. In contrast, talented youngster Niall Breen first had to get accustomed to the rough and tumble of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. The Irishman, who competes for Schnabl Engineering Team Parker Racing, receives support from Porsche this season as “Porsche Motorsport Talent”.

The race in Barcelona will be broadcast live on 9 May by TV stations Eurosport (11.45 hours) and Sky Sport (11.40 hours). Eurosport also televises highlights on Sunday evening in its “Motorsports Weekend” programme.
