Qualifying for Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup round 9 at the Belgian Grand Prix

First pole position for Sean Edwards

Sean Edwards takes up the penultimate round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup from pole position with his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on Sunday in Spa-Francorchamps. In qualifying on the classic circuit in the Ardennes, the Briton driving for Abu Dhabi by tolimit was 0.125 seconds faster than points’ leader René Rast from Germany (Al Faisal Lechner Racing) and secured his first pole position in the world’s fastest international brand trophy series.

Nicholas Tandy (Konrad Motorsport), René Rast’s sole rival for the title, only managed a disappointing 16th position. The Supercup newcomer and two-time winner so far this season didn’t succeed in getting a quick lap in and was 2.724 seconds behind the pole-sitter. With this, his chances to keep the title race open to the final on 12 September in Monza have shrunk to a minimum.

Jaap van Lagen in third position

Behind René Rast, who already has four wins to his credit so far this season and could secure the title on Sunday, Jaap van Lagen (Netherlands, Team Bleekemolen Harders Plaza) secured the third spot on the grid. The fourth quickest time went to Frenchman Nicolas Armindo, the leader of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, who competes for the Al Faisal Lechner Racing team as a guest in Spa. Row five is occupied by Jan Seyffarth (VELTINS MRS Racing), who came third last year, and Kuba Giermaziak from Poland driving for the Verva Racing team. Dutchman Sebastiaan Bleekemolen (Team Bleekemolen Harders Plaza) planted his 911 GT3 Cup on the seventh grid spot ahead of last year’s winner of the BBS Rookie of the Year classification Matt Halliday (SANITEC/GILTRAP Racing) from New Zealand. Supercup record winner Patrick Huisman (Konrad Motorsport) from the Netherlands, who has won here in Spa four times in the past, rounds off the top ten qualifiers with Christian Engelhart (SANITEC/GILTRAP Racing) from Germany.

At the wheel of the VIP-Carrera 911 GT3 Cup fielded by Porsche AG, guest driver Nico Verdonck from Belgium managed to qualify 20th out of a 27-strong field.

Drivers’ comments

Sean Edwards (pole-sitter): “What a great qualifying. My flying lap was not exactly perfect, I made a couple of minor errors but it doesn’t really matter now. I’m delighted with my first pole position in the Supercup and I hope I can also celebrate my first Supercup victory with the team.”

René Rast (2nd in qualifying): “I’m very happy. Obviously, it would have been great to get the two points for pole but things couldn’t have run better for me today. I start from the first row, Nick Tandy is way down the field. Now it’s all about finishing the race well and if possible on the podium. Everything else will fall into place.’

Jaap van Lagen (3rd in qualifying): “Third on the grid is good, I’m pleased with this result. It was anything but easy today. Sometimes wet, then dry again – it was tough managing a really decent lap today.”

Nicholas Tandy (16th in qualifying): “What a disaster. I was out there for four laps and in three of them I was held up by slower drivers. What a shame, particularly since the championship can be decided by it. But I promise one thing: The fight for the title is not yet over.”
