Porsche Team Germany player fulfils her big dream in Rome

Angelique Kerber breaks into Top 10

Stuttgart. Angelique Kerber has fulfilled her big dream one week before the French Open starts in Paris. By reaching the semifinals of the two million dollar tournament in Rome, the Porsche Team Germany player has broken into the world Top 10 for the first time. For the 24-year-old German, who has already won the tournaments in Paris and Copenhagen this year, the achievement marks another milestone in her career.

“Of course it’s a dream to be one of the world’s top ten players,” said Angelique Kerber after her 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals against Petra Kvitova. The Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic is the sixth Top 10 player she has beaten this season. It was a strange match. After winning the first set on a tie-break, Angelique Kerber then lost the plot in the second before finding form again to close out the match on her first match point after two hours and 14 minutes. That she lost 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal against Maria Sharapova, the world No. 2 and Porsche Tennis Grand Prix winner, on Saturday was not the end of the world after the triumph the day before.

“I won’t be thinking every match hey I’m in the Top 10 but I’ll be doing my best on the court and win my matches,” said Angelique Kerber looking forward to the French Open in Paris, the year’s second Grand Slam tournament which begins on Whit Sunday. The match against the tennis diva from Russia was her sixth semifinal appearance this season.

Angelique Kerber is the sixth German to be ranked in the world Top 10. Before her Sylvia Hanika, Bettina Bunge, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Steffi Graf, Anke Huber and Andrea Petkovic all belonged to the illustrious circle of the world’s best women tennis players.

  1. angie kerber play very well. She deserved to be nr 8 of the world today. Oh,she reach the final of the eastbourne on grass. If i am not wrong Kerber will be world nr 7 monday because Wozniacky was out in first round.Kerber is also a lefthand player like Kvitova.Kerber can reach top 5 of the world.I think that she is the best german player after Steffi Graf area.
